Omoplata

Also known as: Ashi-Sankaku-Garami, Shoulder Lock from Guard

Intermediate Difficulty
#14 Popularity

Description

A shoulder lock using the legs to trap and rotate the opponent's arm, attacking the shoulder joint.

History

The omoplata was relatively obscure until Nino Schembri brought it to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It has since become a cornerstone of modern guard play.

Technique Notes

From guard, swing leg over opponent's shoulder and trap their arm with your hamstring. Sit up while keeping leg heavy on shoulder. Grab their belt or hips to prevent roll. Lean forward and lift hips to finish.
