Description
A hyperextension attack on the elbow joint, trapping the opponent's arm between the legs and extending the hips against the elbow.
History
The armbar is fundamental to judo, jujutsu, and BJJ. It was one of the first submissions taught in the Gracie academies and remains the most commonly taught joint lock. Ronda Rousey famously finished most of her MMA fights with armbars.
Technique Notes
Control opponent's arm with both hands. Swing leg over face while keeping knees pinched. Keep their thumb pointed up. Lift hips while pulling arm down to hyperextend elbow. Pinch knees to prevent escape.
